10 Practical Ways to Save Money When Raising Your Children
1. Plan Your Budget Monthly (No Matter How Small)
It is not difficult to plan a budget. All you need to do is add up your regular monthly expenses such as rent, transport, food and small savings, child related expenses and any other payment you pay monthly and then decide how to spend.
Even if the income is small, budgeting helps you avoid unnecessary spending and last-minute borrowing. It is one of the most important ways to save money.
2. Cook Meals at Home
Eating at home is another way to save money especially with children and it is healthier. As much as it’s tempting to buy junks or food on your way back from work because you are tired, that #2,000 everyday adds up to #60,000 a month.
Instead, plan weekly meals. Batch cook your food and soup like vegetables, egusi, ogbona, okra and the likes, store them in the freezer and warm them when needed.
3. Buy Items in Bulk to Save Money
Another way to save money when raising children is buying children items in bulk, especially things you frequently use like diapers, toiletries, wipes, cereal, milk etc. they are cheaper when bought in bulk. Instead of buying them bit by bit every time, plan and buy monthly or bi-monthly, it reduces cost and also saves you from emergency buying at high prices.
4. Buy Secondhand Clothing (Hands-Me-down)
Kids grow fast especially babies and as such there is no reason to pay full retail for kid’s clothes when they grow quickly. Don’t be ashamed to accept Okrika (first grade) for home wear. Save the expensive “Ready-made” clothes for Sunday service or parties. This way it saves some money along the way.
5. Limit Impulse Buying for Children
Children will always want things they see like toys, snacks, clothes, gadgets. If you buy everything, money will not reach the end of month.
Teach them contentment early. Buy when necessary and not every time they ask.
6. Breastfeed If You Can, It Saves Money.
Exclusive breastfeeding in the first six months is a big money saver. It is healthier for the baby and saves you from buying expensive formula milk every week. I for example did exclusive breastfeeding for my baby and it saves me from spending more because it is actually one of the best 10 ways to save money when raising children.
Although, breastfeeding isn’t always an option for many mothers and there’s no shame in that.
7. Use Public Health Centres When Possible
You don’t need a private hospital for every small issue. This alone can save you plenty of money. For immunization, minor sickness, and antenatal care, government hospitals and health centres are cheaper or even free.
For instance, As a mum living in Ibadan, for my baby’s immunization and minor sickness I use Primary Healthcare Centre and it’s free except for medications or injections where necessary.
8. Use Reusable Diapers at Home
Disposable diapers are expensive. So, in order to save money, consider using cloth nappies or reusable diapers when you are at home during the day.
Keep the disposable diapers for bedtime or outing. This method also saves money, and your pocket will thank you.
9. Plan Ahead to Save Money When Raising Children
Being prepared helps you avoid stopping somewhere and spending money on something you forgot. Always form the habit of packing a diaper bag full of everything you might need at any given time, especially for outing. You should also continue to do this as your kids get older by packing drinks, snacks, toys and even a change of clothes.
In addition, as a parent, remember to pack things for yourself too like sunglasses, drinks, and an umbrella.
10. Choose Affordable Schools
Your child does not have to go to a school that charges millions just to “belong”.
Look for standard, affordable private schools or even a well-managed government school to enroll your child. This also helps in saving money when raising them.
Focus on quality teachers, safety, and good values, not just fancy uniforms and big gates.
In Conclusion
Raising children in Nigeria is not easy, but with smart choices and proper planning, you can save money when raising them and still have happy kids.
It’s about being intentional and not about being perfect. Do what works for your home, your pocket, and your peace of mind.
